Wendy Bristow is an artist and sculptor based in Ashburton, Devon.
Wendy sees her work as a journal of observations and an avenue through
which she can convey a message. The thinking behind the work is as
important to her as the work itself and therefore is rarely about
the figurative or decorative piece alone.
For her personally it needs to be meaningful, as although an idea
may originate in a moment of inspiration, some projects can take
months to complete. Time is the most precious of commodities, so
if an individual is then touched by a piece of her work, that time
is made even more precious.
Wendy enjoys both the freedom and spontaneity of line drawing and
loves to work with clay for its mouldable nature and the speed at
which something can be created and completed. On the other hand,
she also finds that carving something in stone is a powerful experience,
each chisel action literally cutting into millions of years of the
geological past.
Wendy loves the idea of combining materials, for example wood and
stone and believes that by experimenting with materials and by mixing
up styles as well as concepts, life can be added to a piece. By using
both textural and smooth finishes whilst blending 3D and line drawing
approaches within the same piece of work can be interesting and exciting.
In the process, if she can find a degree of functional use for the
art she has created, the idea that someone could buy a piece of artwork
they love, and at the same time see it as enhancing their living
space only adds to its appeal. She believes that more often than
not, craft and art can be synonymous.
As well as creating my own pieces, I undertake commissions. If you
are interested in commissioning a piece, please contact me.
